What is self-awareness?
Social Emotional Learning (SEL) comprises five competencies, one of which is self-awareness.
It accurately assesses one’s feelings, interests, strengths, and areas for growth and exudes self-confidence and belief in oneself. A key component of self-awareness is being able to recognize and conceptualize emotions and their causes and triggers (Mayer, Salovey, & Caruso, 2004).
Self-awareness also includes understanding one’s emotions and values and assessing one’s strengths, thoughts, feelings, and actions and how each is interconnected (Weissberg, 2016).
Self-awareness highlights one’s intrinsic motivation and levels of self-pride when goals are attained. This skill relates to one’s self-efficacy, the belief that one has that he or she can achieve his or her fullest potential (Bandura, Babaranelli, Caprara, & Pastorelli, 2001).
